First Images of Saudi Nuclear Reactor Show Plant Nearing Finish

Recent satellite images have confirmed that Saudi Arabia has been completing construction of its first nuclear reactor. Many find this unsettling because it cannot be determined whether the reactor will be used exclusively for peaceful purposes or for the development of a nuclear weapon. Saudi Arabia has stated there is essentially nothing to be concerned about, and that they are not attempting proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Impact: Saudi Arabia has to ensure its safeguards are in order. The region is volatile, and if any other state has reason to believe Saudi Arabia is developing a nuclear weapon, it could lead to an unnecessary arms race. The P5 must also work to determine if this is a reactor truly for peaceful purposes or if it should be cause for concern.
