IAEA Says Iran Abiding by Nuclear Deal

Under the inspection of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran has been determined to be complying with the 2015 nuclear deal. While the US pulled out of this deal recently, Iran is purportedly following set rules and adhering to the Joint Committee Plan of Action (JCPOA). Despite this, the US has recently imposed new sanctions on Iran and the staff employed to run nuclear research and development, including sanctions on travel and commercial transactions. Three other states have created a mechanism to transfer humanitarian aid to the region, outside of the US sanctions.

Impact: The US, while having withdrawn from the Iran deal, is still invested in having influence in the region. US ally Israel has many concerns about Iran’s nuclear program, and using the power of the US is one way to curb the possible Iran nuclear threat. The IAEA has determined that there have not been violations of the nuclear deal on Iran’s part. The continued monitoring by the IAEA will ensure the deal is upheld.
